Initially, Mai was very wary of Nana. She wanted to play the same position and best her in matches. After realizing how Nana and Kakeru truly thinks of her, Mai began to treat Nana like a friend, arguably the closest in Nadeshiko Japan. As a forward and midfielder, the two are capable of pulling off complicated passes to secure victory for the team. Even after becoming friends, Mai is still very competitive and wants to beat her.

Mai is seemingly smitten with Kakeru since she first met him after his match with Shonan High, and playfully calls him "Kakerucchi". She is always trying to get his attention with constant flirting and teasing, and doesn't hesitate to start even when Nana is around. Mai seems to have feelings for Kakeru as she has betted with Nana on who can go out on a date with him depending on who catches the most fish at the summer festival. After the Kanagawa regional tournament in the fall, she went to Kakeru's house as an excuse for a double celebration (Enoshima's victory and Mai signing a professional contract with Nadeshiko League club Shonan Sirena) followed by staying over for the night as she was running away from her father. Mai took part in the night training sessions at the park alongside Kakeru and Nana for a while, but she quickly realized in those sessions that Kakeru only has eyes for Nana.

Mai is grateful to Leonardo for being a caretaker for many years since she ran away from her father when aged 9. When Mai didn't speak Portuguese at the time, the Japanese-fluent Leonardo was able to guide her in a new life in Brazil. Over the years, Mai learned her Ginga soccer style from Leonardo before she followed him to Japan. They have a relationship similar to what normal siblings have, but Leonardo does not share Mai's views about her father and family by blood in general. Leonardo strongly believes that family must stick together through thick and thin, much to Mai's disappointment.
